Hola, everyone! Things finally seem to be up and running properly on my self-hosted site, so I’m pretty happy. Yay! Anyway, for this week’s Where in Spain Wednesday, I have one of my pictures from Gijón, Asturias.
Gijón doesn’t rank anywhere in my top cities in Spain, as I wasn’t especially charmed with the city. That isn’t to say I felt negatively about it; it was more like neutral. Spain has tons of incredibly charming cities, and I just didn’t get the same feeling from Gijón.
But there was one thing I loved about the city – the curving coastline full of surfers and fishermen. Around sunset, I took a walk around the bay and watched the waves. One of my favorite things I spotted on the walk was this angular church that shone golden in the late afternoon. I didn’t go inside, but I imagine it must be quite cool to stand inside a beautiful church listening to the Asturian waves crashing on the shore just outside.

Strange, I loved Gijón! Perhaps it was the beautifully sunny day, but I found it quite quaint. But then again, I felt enchanted by everything in Asturias. The people seemed incredibly warm, the food hearty and the pouring of sidra became an monumental event (that I still fail to accomplish with any accuracy). Have you been to Oviedo? I preferred Gijón, with its surfers and such, more.

I liked Asturias a lot, especially Oviedo, but I just wasn’t charmed by Gijón. Watching the surfers on that pretty coastline was fun though!
I’m from Gijón and I must say that it’s not the most beautiful city in the world or in Spain, or even in Asturias, but has great things. The wonderful seafront that here we call “El muro” is wonderful on a sunny day. That church (La Iglesia de San Pedro) is quite new. The old one was built on the 15th century and was rebuilt after the Civil War. The fishermen’s neighborhood is quite charming but it’s a little bit disregarded. I espeacially like the East part of the city, the neighborhood called Somió where you can find a never-ending collection of great “Casas de Indianos” and chalets (some of the houses are AMAZING) and since it’s a really intricate place is really easy to get lost on a sunny day and enjoy the architecture of the place and maybe dreaming of buying a house.

Yes, I loved the seafront! It’s absolutely beautiful and it was nice and sunny when I went. 🙂 Thanks for showing me a little more of your city, I really like the old church in comparison to the new one.
I know what u mean because I had the same feeling when I visited Gijon, by the way I changed my mind at night. The night life, sidra ambience, it was so nice,I really enjoyed it. By the way Did u visited “universidad laboral”? it is a nice place and I am not sure at all but I believe that this is the biggest public building in SPain. it is not in the city center and most of tourists dont visit it http://www.flickr.com/photos/depaso/4450489656/

I didn’t experience either the nightlife (I was too sick!) or the Universidad Laboral. Perhaps a return visit is in order! 🙂
