Happy miércoles, everyone! It’s a short week this week in Spain, as Friday is a holiday here (it’s All Saints’ Day – a.k.a. my excuse to stay out all night tomorrow celebrating Halloween). For this week’s Where in Spain Wednesday, let’s head to San Sebastián to look at one of my favorite sculptures.

This piece is called the Construcción Vacía – the Empty Construction – and sits on the Paseo Nuevo. I came across it after walking down from the hilly Monte Urgell overlooking San Sebastián and its sweeping coastline. We were lucky enough to catch it just after sunset when the waves were changing from golden to a silvery blue, and the fishermen came out in hopes of luring in a catch.

The artist whose work this is is Jorge Oteiza, a Basque artist. The sculpture used to be in São Paolo in the 1950s, but it got added to San Sebastián’s Paseo Nuevo in 2003. I’m not much of an art buff, but I loved the dramatic geometric silhouette it made against the gently curving coastline, especially at sunset with the fishermen dotting the seafront.

Besos!
