For the past few weeks I’ve featured photos from my adopted city, Barcelona. But this week, I’ve got a photo from one of my other favorite cities in Spain – Salamanca!

This is one of the towers of Salamanca’s Catedral Nueva (the new cathedral). Having grown up in California, it’s still funny to me that something built in the 1500s is considered ‘new’. New, of course, is relative – Salamanca’s old cathedral dates back to the 1100s.

Salamanca was a place I’d wanted to visit since I found out it existed, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. It’s brimming with incredible buildings like this one, and it’s home to Spain’s oldest university.

Salamanca is also famous for being a great place to learn Spanish. They have a clean, clear accent that’s easy to understand. Although I didn’t spend much time there, listening to the salmantinos made me feel like a Spanish language genius!

But there is one major downside to Salamanca – it was bitingly cold when I visited in early March. My little California bones ached in the chilly winds, even though I wrapped up in multiple layers.

Despite the cool weather, out of all the places in Spain I’ve visited so far, Salamanca is the one that I’d most like to spend more time in.

Besos!
